Shquib As-Salam was established in 1979 and later became part of the Regional Council of Masos, and in 1996 was declared a local council. Today, there are approximately 9,000 residents in Shquib As-Salam.
Shquib As-Salam is ranked in lowest cluster of the socio-economic ranking of localities in Israel. There are seven primary and secondary schools in the town, 33 kindergartens and one community center. It also contains and four clinics and medical centers and one emergency medical center, which serve also the residents of the nearby unrecognized Bedouin villages.
